A Matter of Time

In light of the climate crisis and discussions around the topic of sustainability, this thesis deals with the question of how to attend the material in a human-centred, ‘accelerated’ world. It starts from the question of how to act reasonably and sustainably within the context of architecture and branches out into more fundamental questions of the relation between humans and nature, the understanding of matter, and the notion of the ‘we’.
By theoretically and experimentally tackling these questions a tentative approach towards the world is formed. An approach that takes a material-temporal angle and begins from intricate relations and immersion. Through the terms of the material and of the tempus a space is created in which discussions can take place, in which matters of the we, of the material, and of the making of world can be continuously negotiated. It is a matter of how to attend and how to talk, the forming of a tentative language to be close and be of this world.
Ultimately, the thesis comes back to its original question and leads towards possibilities for how to act responsibly as an architect in times of climate change, and in consequence, does not shy away from a possible reformulation of the profession as such.
